TRAINING, CERTIFICATION AND EMPLOYMENT OF PHARMACY TECHNICIANS

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) supports efforts to foster the development, availability and quality of education and training programs for pharmacy technicians. In addition, ICHP supports:

The incorporation of goals and educational objectives identified in the national Model Curriculum for Pharmacy Technician Training into these programs
A requirement for all pharmacy technicians to have successfully completed an ASHP- accredited pharmacy technician training program
The state-wide development of associate degree programs for pharmacy technician education
The establishment and application, by employers, of education and training criteria in the hiring and promotion of pharmacy technicians
The provision of quality continuing education programs for pharmacy technicians

In addition, ICHP recognizes the need for a standardized measure of the skill, knowledge and experience level of technicians and, therefore, supports the requirement that pharmacy technicians practicing in all healthcare settings be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, Inc.
