TECHNICIANS CHECKING TECHNICIANS

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) supports the use of pharmacy technicians in a variety of drug distribution and quality control activities.  Two examples of functions which can be completed by a technician and checked by a second technician are unit dose cart filling and restocking of non-patient specific medications.  Individual healthcare systems must determine an internal mechanism of assuring that technicians who will be providing a double check of medications leaving the pharmacy (1) are qualified and competent to perform the duty and (2) demonstrate a baseline of knowledge of pharmacy practice typically attained through a formal training program and certification (such as PTCB Certification for Pharmacy Technicians, CPhT).  There must also be a regular program of continuous quality assessment and improvement built into the system.
