PREVENTING DRUG DIVERSION AND COUNTERFEITING

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) supports the efforts of the Food and Drug Administration and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) in combating the introduction of counterfeit drugs into the U.S. supply chain. Therefore, ICHP

  1. Supports the Model Rules for the Licensure of Wholesale Distributors issued by the NABP.
  2. Supports mandatory certification through NABP's Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributors program of each wholesale distributor doing business in Illinois.
  3. Supports the requirement that a pedigree be provided for each unit of medication by a wholesale distributor. This pedigree will trace all previous distribution of the prescription drug back to the manufacturer.
  4. Supports researching the use of technology, such as Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID), to provide a possible electronic data structure for identifying pharmaceuticals and tracking their distribution.
  5. Supports initiatives to prevent expired or wasted medications from re-introduction into the supply chain.
