PRESCRIBER DISPENSING

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) believes that pharmacists provide patient services reflective of the pharmacist’s unique knowledge base and that pharmacists are an integral and necessary component of the drug distribution system.  Therefore, ICHP opposes the dispensing of medications by prescribers except when limited prescribers dispensing alleviates a hardship which would otherwise be imposed on the patient in obtaining needed medications within an appropriate period of time.

In situations when prescribers do dispense medications, ICHP strongly recommends and Illinois State law requires that the prescribers adhere to those standards that govern dispensing by pharmacists including: proper medication storage, labeling, record keeping and patient counseling.
