MAINTAINING A STATEWIDE POISON INFORMATION CENTER SYSTEM

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP), recognizing the adverse outcomes associated with the inappropriate use of medications, believes that the availability of information regarding the treatment of poisoning is of paramount importance to public safety.  This service provided by the Illinois Poison Center includes guiding practitioners through treatment guidelines for intentional or accidental poisoning with medications or household chemicals or plants.  The societal costs of inadequate treatment of poisonings far outweigh the costs of maintaining this information service.  The ICHP, therefore, supports the use of continued public funding to maintain a statewide poison information service which is accessible by health care practitioners and the public without charge.
