Mid-level Practitioners may now be licensed to prescribe C-IIs

August 24, 2010

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced today that Physician Assistants and Advance Practice Nurses may now be licensed by the DEA to prescribe up to five oral C-II medications if working collaboratively with an Illinois-licensed physician.  The entire press release may be found at http://www.idfpr.com/NEWSRLS/2010/08242010ContSubOnline.asp.  Please advise your pharmacy colleagues that a special license is required and the PA or APN should provide that new license number with each prescription.  Before the PA or APN my apply with the DEA they must first obtain an Illinois mid-level practitioner controlled substance license or update their current controlled substance license to include Schedule II controlled substances.

We hope you find this information helpful and please forward to any physician assistants and advanced practice nurses you may work with.
