Responsibilities


The role you'll contribute:
Primary responsibility is to facilitate the development, implementation, and continuous quality improvement of coordinated pharmacy services across the system. Provides guidance for the integration of clinical pharmacy services, drug utilization programs, and pharmacy operations throughout the institution. Ensures medication use is aligned with evidence-based best practices and regulatory standards. Directs the activities of pharmacists who work within assigned area. Work to meet highly specialized pharmacy business needs in programs such as Clinical Services, Medication Safety, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Education and Staff Development, Supply Chain, Policy, Regulatory, Informatics, Operations Services. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

  • Coordinates, audits, and maintains existing and new pharmacy programs, quality improvement changes, and medication stewardship programs to advance the organization's medication-use systems and promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Coordinates, audits, and maintains existing quality assurance programs, including but not limited to drug utilization reviews; clinical intervention documentation audits; and clinical outcome assessments, to maintain optimal clinical and operational pharmacy services and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Coordinates and maintains existing education and training programs designed to fully develop the skills of the pharmacy department staff and ensure the competency of the pharmacists involved in any pharmacy services.
  • Develops and coordinates educational content for medical staff members, nursing partners and ancillary teams
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways as approved by appropriate committees.
  • Provides departmental and institutional representation for medical staff committees/meetings, hospital groups/task forces, and approved external programs/organizations.
  • Participates and coordinates pharmacy, facility, and medical staff committees as assigned
  • Acts as a preceptor for pharmacy residents based on the guidelines of the ASHP residency accreditation standards and for pharmacy students on rotation consistent with academic requirements.
  • Maintain expertise in the standards of The Joint Commission (TJC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) quality management systems, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), Board of Pharmacy, and other bodies relevant to hospital practice.
  • Audits and coordinates pharmacy quality assurance program including pharmacy department compliance with healthcare regulatory and accreditation agency requirements, and applicable state and federal laws across the division.

Performs other duties as assigned

Clinical Services:
  • Prepare agenda, minutes, drug monographs, policy & procedures and formulary recommendations for the P&T Committee
  • Provide consultation to physicians on drug usage and therapeutic appropriateness decisions.
  • Develop and monitor medication use and reports results to P&T Committee and Medical staff committees
  • Design and implement quality and performance improvement initiatives around formulary agents
  • Review utilization of formulary and non-formulary medication, including but not limited to adherence to criteria for use
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary and/or criteria for use changes, and critical pathways as approved by appropriate committees.
  • Facilitate the development or revision of clinical pharmacy services

Informatics Services:
  • Design and maintain technology functions to optimize pharmacy operations, clinical services, automation devices and applications, medication safety, supply chain management, and pharmacy finance processes
  • Maintain expertise in data analytics, project management, pharmacy automation hardware and applications, and electronic health record (EHR) integration and functionality

Educational and Staff Development Services:
  • Create, develop, and maintain the structure, format and timeline of pharmacy education and training philosophy, goals, and requirements
  • Identify, assess, and facilitate the provision of resources and tools for successful execution of education and training programs
  • Design and maintain the department orientation for all new pharmacist personnel, including residents to ensure the orientation process contains all the required elements of the job including applicable computer systems, policy and procedure, customer service and communication etiquette.
  • Design, maintain, and facilitate education and training programs aimed at developing the clinical skills of the pharmacy department staff and ensuring the competency of the pharmacists involved in pharmacy services.
  • Serve as a consultant to supervisors and administrators to provide other educational resources and training to meet the specific needs of the Pharmacy department(s).
  • Coordinate the creation of education programs, including use of eLearning technologies, to enhance the knowledge level of the pharmacy staff. Assists with reviewing and updating established education programs to ensure relevance and accuracy.

      Requirements



      Qualifications
      The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:
      • Bachelor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy, or other advanced pharmacy degree
      • Three years of current hospital pharmacy practice experience.
      • Current, valid State Pharmacist license
      • Board certification from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties required within 18 months of start date
      • PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY2 Specialty Residency
      • Pharmacy leadership with supervisory experience
      • Practice experience in a large hospital (greater than 500 bed institution) and integrated healthcare system (three or more hospitals in system)
