ICHP Position Statement - Non-Pharmacist Prescriber Dispensing

The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) believes that all medication dispensing must be performed by or under the supervision of a pharmacist. ICHP opposes the dispensing of medications by non-pharmacist prescribers unless the prescriber dispensing alleviates a patient hardship in obtaining needed medications.

ICHP recognizes that not all professions are currently held to the same regulatory standards as pharmacy for dispensing medication, with regard to proper medication storage, labeling, record keeping, and patient counseling. In situations when non-pharmacist prescribers do dispense medications, ICHP strongly recommends that they follow the same standards that govern pharmacy dispensing.
