The Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) believes that all medication functions must be performed by or under the supervision of a pharmacist. ICHP opposes the dispensing of medications by non-pharmacist prescribers except when limited prescriber dispensing alleviates a hardship which would otherwise be imposed on the patient in obtaining needed medications.

In situations when non-pharmacist prescribers do dispense medications, ICHP strongly recommends and Illinois State law requires that non-pharmacist prescribers adhere to those standards that govern dispensing by pharmacists including: proper medication storage, labeling, record keeping and patient counseling.
