At the conclusion of this knowledge-based continuing pharmacy education activity, pharmacist participants should be able to:
1. Review epidemiology and pathogenesis of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
2. Describe the painful manifestations of SCD during and between vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC).
3. Identify validated methods of assessing pain in the pediatric patient population.
4. Discuss risks for disparities in care for at risk patient populations.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based continuing pharmacy education activity, pharmacy technician participants should be able to:
1. Describe a patient experiencing vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC).
2. State a few treatment options for patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and during VOC.
3. Explain how a patient's age determines appropriateness for the use of Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA).
