Take Me Out to the Ballgame Networking Event
Come one, come all new
practitioners to the Chicago Cubs vs. Houston Astros or Peoria
Chiefs vs. Clinton Lumberkings baseball games this fall. Join
your fellow new practitioners, enjoy a baseball game and get to
know other pharmacists in a similar place in their career.
Break out the Cubs gear you
haven’t used yet this year and get ready for some fun with your
colleagues. Who can resist the stadium hot dogs, some nachos,
and the beverage of your choice? Not to mention the thrill of
singing “Go Cubs Go!” after our new practitioners’ support helps
the Cubs win the game. Last year, the New Practitioners
Network’s baseball game was such a success that we made it even
bigger this year.
Jennifer D’Souza, one of the many
new practitioners who attended the game last year, recalls that
everyone who went to the game had a great time. She enjoyed
spending the evening networking with her colleagues while
watching a baseball game. As a new resident to Chicagoland,
PGY-1 resident Kate Schemmel said “I had a good time because
there was a good turnout from other area programs and I got to
meet people from other programs that I saw later at ICHP or
other professional organization events.” No matter your current
position, as a new practitioner you can spend a relaxing evening
with your pharmacy friends and make some new contacts with
others in the area.
Nick Corcodilos of
asktheheadhunter.com considers networking to be a necessary
skill in many professions. According to Yahoo! HotJobs, you
should never put a “cap” on the number of contacts you make.
Remember, in pharmacy, it’s who you know, not what you know.
Yahoo! HotJobs also recommends joining a professional
organization. If you’re receiving KeePosted, you’re probably
already a member. Well, take advantage of your membership and
work on your networking skills.
The NPN has reserved a block of
tickets in the Upper Deck Reserved at Wrigley Field for the game
on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008. All new practitioners,
residency directors and preceptors are encouraged to purchase
one ticket at $20 each and join us for the game. Game time is
7:05pm, and the first 10,000 fans into the stadium will be given
a Kosuke Fukudome “1” player number cap, so get there as soon as
you can. Tickets are limited to one each per new practitioner,
residency director or preceptor, but depending on the number of
new practitioners who purchase tickets, we may open the sale up
to other ICHP members so keep an eye out for an email update on
the status of the game.

History
The
2005-2006 year marks the end of the ICHP NPN's third year since
its inception. During this time, the NPN has acted as a
facilitator to pharmacists new to the health-system practice.
NPN Executive Committee Division Liaisons carry the message of
the NPN to the five standing Divisions
of ICHP (Educational, Professional, Legislative, Marketing, and
Organizational Affairs). In turn, the liaisons report back
to the Executive Committee about the goings-on within the
Division and propose action items with which NPNers can get
involved. This organizational construct is modeled after
ASHP's New Practitioners Forum.
ICHP is
still the only statewide health-system pharmacy organization to
have a formal section for new practitioners.
If you would
like to get more involved or for more information about the NPN,
please email Suzanne Rabi, NPN Chair, at
NewPractitionersNetwork@ichpnet.org.
