Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this application-based continuing pharmacy education activity, pharmacist participants should be able to:
1. Identify appropriate and inappropriate use of ceftazidime/avibactam and ceftolozane/tazobactam, given a patient case.
2. Correlate antibiotics and microbiology susceptibility reports based on gram negative patterns of resistance.
3. Compare and contrast the spectrum of activity of both ceftazidime/avibactam and ceftolozane/tazobactam and describe when each would be used clinically.
4. Apply current guideline recommendations to create an appropriate antimicrobial therapy regimen using ceftolozane/tazobactam and/or ceftazidime/avibactam when given a patient case.
5. Recommend appropriate antimicrobial dose adjustments when given patient specific parameters.
At the conclusion of this application-based continuing pharmacy education activity, pharmacy technician participants should be able to:
1. Assign the generic name to the brand name for ceftazidime/avibactam and ceftolozane/tazobactam and various other multi-drug antibiotics.
2. Recognize a potential duplication of therapy, with regard to antibiotics, given a patient's medication list.
3. Formulate the appropriate method for reconstituting and diluting ceftolozane/tazobactam and ceftazidime/avibactam for administration.
4. Describe the appropriate storage conditions for reconstituted and diluted ceftazidime/avibactam and ceftolozane/tazobactam and recommend appropriate expiration dates for room temperature vs. refrigerated.
