Registration deadline is 9:00 am, January 26, 2016. There is no fee for ICHP members to attend this activity. Non-members who would like to earn CPE credit will be charged $20. There is no fee for non-members who do not want to earn CPE credit. Non-members who do not want to earn CPE credit should call the ICHP office at 815-227-9292 to register. Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this application-based continuing pharmacy education activity, pharmacist participants should be able to:

1. Compare and contrast the pharmacokinetic properties of insulin formulations.
2. Apply current guideline recommendations to create an appropriate basal-bolus insulin order for a patient presenting with hyperglycemia in the hospital in a non-critical care setting.
3. Determine if a patient is insulin-sensitive, usual, or insulin-resistant to choose correct supplement insulin scale.
4. Recognize hypoglycemia and recommend appropriate treatment.
5. Apply guideline recommendations for special situations including transition from IV continuous insulin infusion to subcutaneous therapy.

At the conclusion of this application-based continuing pharmacy education activity, pharmacy technician participants should be able to:

1. Categorize the various insulin formulations as rapid, short, intermediate, long, or ultra long acting.
2. Determine correct insulin storage and expiration dates based on insulin formulation using a patient case.
3. Assess insulin regimens to identify potential inappropriate duplication of therapy.
4. Compare the benefits of basal-bolus with correctional insulin to sliding scale insulin.
5. Distinguish the appropriate rescue therapy for a patient experiencing hypoglycemia.

Target Audience: This application-based activity was developed for Health-System Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians.

PTCB now requires CPhTs to earn only pharmacy technician-specific (‘T-specific’) credit to qualify for recertification.
In addition, PTCB will reduce the number of allowable CPE hours earned through in-service training from 10 to 5. Please advise all pharmacy technicians at your site of this change.
