Overview:
This program will focus on the use of high concentration insulin formulations in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Faculty will discuss the clinical, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles for current and emerging basal insulins as well as currently available insulin pens and syringes used for the administration of insulin. Additionally, faculty will provide instruction regarding strategies for safely converting between U-100 and concentrated insulin formulations using different syringes and pen devices.

Target Audience:
This activity has been developed for pharmacists, pharmacy directors, and other healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients with diabetes.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the reasons for the use  of high concentration insulin formulations in the treatment of type 2 diabetes
  • Discuss the clinical, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles for current and emerging basal insulins
  • Implement strategies for safely converting between U-100 and concentrated insulin formulations using different syringes and pen devices in patients with type 2 diabetes
  • Review currently available insulin pens and syringes used for the administration of insulin
  • Explain and apply strategies to overcome the barriers to insulin-mediated glucose control

These are ongoing programs with an initial release date of 04.24.15.
